I tried to update my gps unit on garmin.com but it says there are no updates for it at this time. It does not even pick up a gas station that has been here for 2 years!

2 years isn’t that old in terms of GPS and mapping programs.

Most of Garmin’s maps were released in 2005-2006. They are due for some updates, however that would likely only include 2006 data.

There isn’t some giant universal map database that everyone uses. There are several map sources, and each must be compiled for different manufacturers’ units. Then the compiled maps have to be manufactured onto the GPS units themselves, or upgrade DVDs/CDs/flash cards.

All the GPS units warn you that data is not up-to-the minute accuracy, and is only a guide for finding locations.
