We’re going to be doing our review of the TomTom XL 340TM and TomTom XXL 540TM soon but for now we are just taking a very quick look at the differences between these GPS units as this can often be the starting point when people come to buy.
There is not doubt that TomTom have come up with a great new range of GPS units so without further ado here is a quick rundown of the difference. Basically it is just in the screen size, the XL 340XM being a 4.3 inch unit and the XXL 540XM being a 5 inch unit. You will pay more for the 540XM but you get the benefits of a bigger screen. 0.7 inches extra doesn’t sound much but it represents 17% more area and you can get a lot of information in that space.
You can find out more including reviews of the above units as well as information about all the latest TomTom and Garmin GPS units by taking a look at this GPS Navigation page.

I realize the headline makes it sound like there is war going on between Garmin and TomTom. Well things are never going to get that bad. In fact I think they like the other’s presence in the market as it keeps them on their toes. It’s good for the consumer as well.

The thing that caught my eye was this article which you would think continues to fuel the debate:
To summarize, neither of the brands has a clear cut advantage over the other. In certain cases, a Tomtom GPS will be better than a Garmin, and in other situations, the opposite may hold true. The best thing to do is to compare the individual units within your price range, based on features important to you, and use reviews of each unit to make your final decision.
As you can see though, they end up with a similar conclusion as most people when they look at comparing Garmin with TomTom. Each has their strengths and so it’s impossible to categorically state that one beats the other.
It is true to say that Garmin lead the way when it comes to handheld and portable devices. TomTom however have just released a raft of devices for in-car GPS and they have just about stuck their noses in front in that are. Cue Garmin to come up with their next product.
